Frederike Helwig was born in 1968 in Hamburg, Germany. She came to London in the early 1990s to study at Bournemouth College of Art and started her 20 year editorial career as a portrait photographer with magazines such as i-D and The Face.

Alongside her editorial practice she is currently working on a series of personal projects that were made during her time as an editorial photographer, exploring social documentary, portraiture and still life. Manifesting in publications, her first photo zine Propaganda was self-published in 2016, and the second Rundgang was published by Here Press in 2017.

Most recent is Kriegskinder, a long-term project that started in 2014, which explores identity and the personal history of people who grew up in post war Germany. Published by Hatje Cantz, the series is currently being exhibited in Berlin.
