Frederike Helwig is a British-German photographer based in London. Born in Hamburg, she began her career photographing for influential magazines including i-D and The Face. Her practice spans editorial and commercial commissions alongside long-term personal projects, ranging from social documentary and portraiture to still life.
Alongside her commissioned work, Helwig has produced several personal projects, including Propaganda (self-published, 2016), Rundgang (Here Press, 2017), and Kriegskinder (Hatje Cantz, 2017), a long-term project about identity and personal history among those who grew up in post-war Germany.
Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the National Portrait Gallery, London; Haus der Photographie, Deichtorhallen Hamburg; Athens Photography Festival; and GFMF, Berlin. Helwig has received awards from D&AD, the Lead Awards for Editorial Photography, and the Anamorphosis Prize for Propaganda. She has also been nominated for the ICP Infinity Award and the Prix Pictet. Her portrait photography is held in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.
