Frederike Helwig was born in 1968 in Hamburg, Germany. She came to London in the early 1990s and started her 20 year editorial career with magazines such as i-D and The Face. She is currently working on a series of personal projects that were made during her time as an editorial photographer, exploring social documentary, portraiture and still life. Manifesting in publications, the first, Propaganda was self-published in 2016 and the second, Rundgang was published by Here Press in 2017. Most recent is Kriegskinder, a long-term project that started in 2014, which explores identity and personal history of people who grew up in post war Germany. In 2017, Kriegskinder was published by Hatje Cantz. Since 2015 Helwig is an Associate Lecturer at UAL.
